Kristie's Phone Call, Sunday, August 16, 2009

Sunday, August 16, 2009
Kristie called this afternoon. She sounded great and upbeat. It was pretty funny because she was inside her locker talking on the phone trying to get some privacy. I guess her area is the social place. All of the “sisters” like to come over and visit her roommate. We talked about how fast time has been going. It has been 6 weeks. It has gone by so fast. Here’s some of the things she talked about:
Shooting: She told me about how her drill sergeant knows everything about guns. She is so impressed with his knowledge. They shoot their M-16 every day. While her group was practicing their shooting, she was one point away from making sharp shooter. When they did the testing, they had to suit up in their full uniforms. It added about 15 pounds and messed with their accuracy.
I sent her pictures of Shoshone Falls, the canyon, and other pictures of the area. Everyone was impressed with the Falls. No one could figure out why I would be sending scenery pictures to her. She told them that she only lived 5 minutes from there and everyone was amazed.
Her platoon keeps getting yelled at by the drill sergeants’ because they just are not coming together as a team. They say their platoon is the worst they have ever seen.
Someone from her platoon s being kicked out of Basic. She was caught stealing clothes from the dryers. I guess she has caused quite a few problem sever since she got there. She has faked passing out because it was too hot and other stuff.
I asked her if the black bras and panties I sent her fit. She was so excited that they did and that she didn’t have to wear the dingy brown (formerly white) underwear that she had. I asked her if she appreciated the little things in life better. Oh yeah!
They have been doing FTX Training. It is where they sleep in the woods for 3 days. Her drill sergeants’ tell them that they are going to throw gas into their tents while they are sleeping. Kristie says she doesn’t sleep very well on those nights.
Do you know what chiggers are? Little bugs that are in grass and other areas and they like to bite people. Kristie had never heard of them before and didn’t realize that she had been being bit all day long. She said she looked like she had chicken pox there were so many bites. Ticks are really bad too. Whenever they get back to the barracks they have to do a buddy check. Nasty things!
Next week, her platoon will be doing the Blue Phase Testing. Not sure what that is. Maybe I’ll get more information and post it. She will be doing some combat water training. She is excited about being able to play in the pool. She’ll have to tell us more about it.
She said that when the mail leaves or is received at the base it has to go through x-rays and chemical testing. It probably takes an extra day to process it through.
They have been working on their night shooting. Wearing the night vision goggles (only one eye) really messes with your depth perception. When shooting, they have a lazor on their gun. She was sahying that her gun jammed and that nothing was going right. Her drill sergeant just looked at her and said, “Private You’re Dead”. Hummm….
Next week, they will be practicing their shooting while live rounds are being fired over their head. Scary.
I guess there have been several tornado sirens go off. She is real scared when they go off but a lot of the people don’t think too much about it and think it is funny that Kristie is scared. They ask her if Idaho has any tornadoes or other natural disasters and she says no, nothing.
She received an e-mail from one of the people she works with. She was so excited when she received it. This last week she has had some free time this last week so she was able to write some letters. Look for them everybody.
I’ll post her next letter when I receive it.
Thanks for reading!

Kristie's Letter, Dated July 31, 2009

Kristie has been at Fort Leonard Wood for a month now. I have to admit the first couple of weeks were very rough for me. I miss her a lot. Even now it doesn't take much to bring a tear to my eye just thinking about her. This last week (July 27 through 31) a lot of bad stuff was happening to her that was not very pleasant. Kristie's honesty and strength sure prevailed in the situation based on the actions that were taken. There is more information in her letter. Here it is:

Hey Mom,

Well I thought I'd give you an update on life in the army. We have had BRM (Basic Rifle Marksmanship) for the last week. I want expert so bad!! Whoever gets expert, which is 36 out of 40 shots we get to wear a pin for graduation. That would be awesome!

Tomorrow we go to the range for a practice quality: Like we will shoot 10 rounds in kneeling supported, 10 kneeling unsupported and 20 in prone supported. We shot targets from 50m to 300 meters away. I'm really good at my "fundamentals" which is grouping the shots. The four fundamentals are breathing, aiming, steady position, and trigger squeeze. If any of these are off we will usually get told that we suck and need to fix ourselves. LOL.

I'm definitely used to the yelling now. A new company just came in on Friday so I hear them getting yelled at...a lot! It's a good feeling knowing we have passed that stage. We moved to White Phase today which means we can ride trans to church and the doctors and stuff, more freedom pretty much. We have been in red phase. Also in white phase we don't have mass smoking so if someone screws up they get in trouble instead of the whole platoon in trouble.

Well I'm going to let you know some bad news :(. You know how I got in a fight with that one girl and I said I'd kill the bitch? Well someone...put bleach in her water canteen. I had to go talk to the company commander and everything today. If my name comes up one more time I get a dishonorable discharge. She told everyone that I did it on my fireguard shift and came up with this whole story. It was really bad. Good thing everyone, well almost everyone knows I'm not the type to do something like that. All the females had to write sworn statements, the whole shabang. Drill sargeant Lam really likes me so he stood up for me a lot. I think we get our phones on Sunday so I will tell you more about it then but it's past lights out so I'm going to bed. I'm tired, had a long stressful day.

Thanks for the letters. I love reading them!

Love Your Army Guard Daughter PV2 Johnson

The outcome of the bleach in the canteen is that the girl was transferred out of the platoon. When I talked to her on Sunday, she sounded tired and exhausted. I'm sure it's part physical tired and part mentally tired. I was a nervous wreck when she told me about what went on that week. It was horrible.

I would encourage all of you to write her. She misses everyone and truly loves receiving letters from you. The address is on this blog spot.

Kristie's Letter, Dated July 16, 2009

Hi all. Kristie has written a few letters and I'm behind in posting them. I'm going to get them posted as soon as I can. Here is her letter dated July 16, 2009:

Hey Mom,
I just got your letter from the 11th so it takes about 5 days for me to get your letters. An yes I do just switch barracks but you will see how big the base is in September. It's bigger than Filer, maybe about Twin's size.
The boardwalk between the house and grandpa's shop sounds neat. By the way, you can just send pictures. Not too many at a time though cause I have to show my drill sargeant all of them.
Oh and Natalie, oh my goodness! In the pictures she doesn't even look like she cares! She is so accident prone it kills me.
I've really decided that I left at a really good time, since I'm not missing a thing! Well except for Isaac's soccer. You will have to send me pictures!
Tell them boys (Zane, Isaac, and Davis) to write me a letter! I miss them a lot more than I thought since I don't see them that often anyway. But now I'm forced to not see them.
By the way, Melody is right. It takes a little while to see how far you can push each drill sargeant and everything. But since I had RSP I know all the rules and everything already. RSP saved my ass by far.
I can't believe you didn't like Benjamin Button! I loved it. I haven't even heard of Bedtime Stories. Are there any more cool movies coming out? I can't even remember anymore.
How is your class going? Congrates on your 92% (I think that's what you said) that's super awesome. It has been a while since I saw a good grade like that. I was burned out last semester.
So on to my last few days. We were supposed to do the confidence course on Tuesday but it rained again. We've had to cancel a lot of training because of the rain. Rain drops here are huge!!! Like 5 drops hit your head and you can ring your hair out. Anyway, yesterday we did the confidence tower. Dun...dun...dun...we had to repel down 50 ft. Let me tell you that wall sways at the very top. But I did good. I didn't do the best but I didn't get yelled at at all. :) One male started crying on the top. The drill sargeant started screaming at him to get him lean back and he started to back off him to try a different approach type thing...well you bet your ass that male took off his rope and climbed over to the ladder and was like ok...ok..I'll get down. haha He was sooo funny.
Then today, we did the gas chamber. How bad do you think it is? It's worst. We put on the masks and go into the chamber and all your exposed skin just starts burning. Then they make you take your mask off. My eyes started gooping up and watering, my nose was just dripping, more lik running like a garden hose ha ha, my mouth was producing more saliva than imaginable. I was drooling like a freakin' dog when you hold a steak in front of him. Right before they let us out everyone was coughing. They made us talk and hold our masks above our heads. We were in there only for about 4 to 5 minutes but out of 15 of us that went in, only 7 or 8 of us stayed the whole time and didn't come out with an asthma attack, throwing up, passing out, and having to be drug out of the chamber. One of my biggest accomplishments. About 20 minutes later, I felt fine and really proud.
I got a letter from Christy today as well :). It was good to hear from her.
Tell Matt congrats on the transport of the month -- almost :).
Well they just announced lights out so I love ya'll very much.
By the way, family day is the day before graduation.
Love ya,
PV2 Johnson

Kristie's Phone Call Home - July 12, 2009

Kristie just called. She gets to call every Sunday and talk for 20 minutes. She was so happy to talk to us.

She says she tries to write letters but lights out is at 9 a.m. They aren't allowed to use their flashlights at nigh. She says she is too tired to stay awake anyway. The wake-up alarm goes off and 5:30 and she says she feels like she only slept for 5 minutes. I told her I have this blogspot for her and she wants everyone to read this as sending letters out is really difficult. She did say that no one in her group has received any letters yet. Maybe they are holding them, she doesn't know. Eventually they'll get to her.

Yesterday in an exercise, the group was standing at attention (or something else) and she moved like a quarter of an inch and her drill sergeant saw her. The whole group got "smoked" and had to do 45 minutes worth of intense physical training. She was pretty sore.

Graduation is September 10th.

She talked to CJ and told him that it was pretty hot and humid there. On one inspection of the barracks they dumped all the garbage cans that had garbage in them. She said there were about 40 tampons on the ground. So, they found that if an inspection is going to happen, empty your garbage can. She also said that it wasn't unusual for them to throw drawers across the room or flip mattresses.

Kristie talked to Matt and told him about her OCD Drill Sergeant and told stories about having to tie their shoes after taking them off and tucking into the shoe before putting the shoes under the bed in just the right location. They laughed so I felt that was a good sign.

Overall, she sounded good, hyper as usual and talking a hundred miles a minute. I mentioned that in one of her letters she referred to someone as sweet as pie. I told her she had the southern drawl going on already. She said that everyone is either from the east coast or from the south. There is one person that she has met from Washington, one from Oregon, and her from Idaho. When she tells them she is from Idaho, they ask where that is. Pretty crazy.

Kristie's Letter - Tuesday, July 7, 2009

Hey Family,

Well I ship tomorrow for Basic which means I'm finally done with reception (the 43rd). I'm not sure when I'll have time to write again so I'll give you a final update for now.

On Saturday, when we went ot the fireworks we rode in a semi truck trailer. There was like over 100 of us in one trailer. I felt like a Mexican getting smuggled into the US (haha). The show was awesme. I got real close with 2 girls, Courtney and Price. Courtney lives here, or in St. Louis and Michelle Price lives in Illinois so is about 20 minutes away from St. Louis. I get along with both of them so good. All of our bunks are close together so at night we all sit on one of our beds and just talk. I feel like I've known them forever.

Sunday was cleaning day. I've never cleaned so much in one day before. The males have lawn duty so they mow the lawn on Sundays.

Yesterday I had another hearing test and passed again. We also got all our immunizations. All you do is walk down a line and there are medics on both sides at 3 stations, so 6 medics all together. You just walk, stop, get stuck, and keep walking till you are done. It CRAZINESS! Then I had to get a penicillin shot in my butt. It hurt soooooo bad and it took hours for it to stop hurting. I guess it is supposed to help you from getting sick at Basic. I dunno. The rest of the day I got put on detail, which means I am helping, in my case I was in PABs (Personal Affairs Branch), kind of like HR. That was way fun. I was in charge of a bunch of soldiers. It felt good to be worth something instead of being a private. Today all I had left to do was get dental x-rays so I went back to PABs cause the head guy, Frank, loved me. I went in at 730 and didn't leave until 1730 except for chow and it took around 10 minutes to get my xrays cause I got put in the front of the line so I could get back to PABs fast. haha Everyone else was getting smoked all day. Courtney came in around 1000 to help me so it was me and her chilling all day.

After dinner chow we formed up in what will be our new companies and Price and I are together all through Basic but Courtney isn't. But have no worries we exchanged phone numbers.

Will I love all of ya. I gotta go to bed. Lights out was almost an hour ago but I stillhad to pack and I wanted to write.

Matt- I met a guy today that looked more like the guy in Save the Last Dance than you do Chris Farley. haha He just shook his head. He is sweet as pie.

Dad - I wish I could have your advice here. Even though you didn't go through this it seems like you did.

Mom - A hug from you would have been great this week but I know that's not going to happen for a few more weeks so I have to be strong. This place is almost starting to feel like prison. You can't get out anywhere. If you try and run away, the name holds true, you get lost in the woods.

Love, Kristie aka PV2 Johnson

Kristie's First Letter Arrives

Tim and Kristie waiting in line to get their boarding passes.

Kristie, just before she goes through the security gate. Sad time.

I got my first letter from Kristie today. Pretty exciting. She is writing much earlier than what she thought she would be able to. It was funny seeing her signature "PVT JOHNSON". She still does not have a return address yet but will send it when she has it. She also said that she might be able to use her phone on Sundays. She didn't call this Sunday, but we'll wait and see.

Jodie

Here are parts of Kristie's Letter:
Wednesday, 2 July 2009
Hey Mom,
Well I know I just talked to you but I thought I’d tell you how my last 2 days have been, things I didn’t have time to tell you.
Yesterday when we got off the bus we had to sit in the main foyer FOREVER & and get “briefed” about what’s going to happen during reception. I found out today that we get “briefed” more than we actually do what the day has in store for us. One of my drill sargeants says freakin’ all the time. And she has a southern accent so it sounds even funnier. But after we finished talking we went and got all of our PT clothes, towels & linens. Tim was right about it. We wait in line for hours just for one item. We finally got back to the barracks around midnight & had to shower & get ready for bed. Then at 2 a.m. I got woke up for CQ. It think it was suicide watch cause I got sat outside of a little room. It’s like fire guard though.
Today we got woke up at 5 a.m. went to chow then went to the medical, dental, and vision area. I got my blood drawn, got a TB test, confirmed I still have 20/20 vision, got a mouth guard, went to chow again, got briefed on the liaison for the National Guard and the laundry service, went to chow again & now I’m done for the day.
I’m having fun even though I’m tired and I haven’t even started PT yet. :/ I ship off to the “real” basic on Wednesday unless something goes wrong with my paperwork. We have a 3 day weekend because of 4th July so we don’t have anything to do for the next 3 days. On Saturday we are going to a carnival to watch the fireworks. Haha sounds like boot camp huh? The corporal said that we have PT in the morning and someone asked him what we will do…run ½ mile. How lame. I thought I was getting in shape. JK. I have yet to see what it is all about.
